2023 RULES
NEW RULE: Wrong Score Call
2023 PPA Pro and Sr. Open Rule Changes*
*These rules are amended from the 2023 USAP Rulebook
- Service Motion Replay: If the referee determines that the server has performed a questionable service motion, the referee will call for a re-serve and provide an explanation to the server.
PPA and MLP: Each player is allowed 1 warning per match. Any subsequent violation of the service motion will result in a fault. Note: The referee may immediately call a fault for any blatant service motion violation. - Let Serve Replay: Referee-called and (legitimate) player-called “lets” will be replayed.
- No Spin Serves: If the referee detects any amount of spin added to the serve release of the ball, simply call “serve error” (too much spin) and call for a re-serve.
- No Drop Serves: Drop serves are not allowed. If a player performs a drop serve, the referee will call for a re-serve.
- Ensuring Player Positions: The referee and/or players will ensure proper server, receiver, and server/receiver positions before the score is called.
- A. If an error is not corrected before the serve and the error is identified during an ongoing rally, the rally shall be replayed.
- B. If an error is discovered after the rally has (naturally) completed, the result of the rally shall stand.
Pre-Match Briefing:

- All winner bracket matches are 2 out of 3 (switch sides in game 3 at 6 points).
- All loser bracket matches (not including the bronze match) are 1 to 15 (switch sides at 8 points).
- Serving while the referee is calling the score is a fault.
- The referee must have a verbal appeal request before ruling on any line call.
- Make all “out” calls loud and clear.
- The referee must have a verbal appeal request before ruling on any line call.
- Players are responsible for making the line calls on their side of the net.
- Each team has 2 timeouts in the above-listed game formats (3 timeouts in a game to 21).
