  • NEW BLOOD: For the first time ever on the PPA Tour, neither Anna Leigh Waters nor Ben Johns will be in a Singles final, when one or both were in the tournament. Waters’ streak of Triple Crowns ends at six in a row, tied with Simone Jardim for the PPA Tour record.
  • BEN JOHNS enters Sunday with 95 career PPA titles.
=== MEN’S SINGLES ===

GABRIEL JOSEPH, the #24 seed, clinched his second PPA Singles medal by upsetting four players with better seeds. He earned a silver in August of 2020, losing to Ben Johns at the PPA Showcase.

FEDERICO STAKSRUD, the #2 seed, sailed through the bottom of the bracket, losing only one game. This is his seventh Singles final this year, which ties Ben Johns for the most in 2023. Staksrud has earned two golds and four silvers this year.

BEN JOHNS losing in the round of 16 to Yates Johnson was a sign of things to come…there were nine upsets based on seeding in the men’s bracket.

Bronze medal: (6) JW Johnson.

=== WOMEN’S SINGLES ===

HURRICANE TYRA BLACK, the #9 seed, had the biggest win of her career by beating Anna Leigh Waters in the semifinals. She has clinched her first PPA medal, and she would like it to be gold.

YANA NEWELL, the #6 seed, upset #2 seed Mary Brascia in the semis to earn a spot in her first PPA Singles final. Newell earned two bronzes last week in Seattle. (Singles and Women’s Doubles).

The women’s bracket had eleven upsets in its 25 matches.

Bronze medal: (5) Lauren Stratman.

=== MIXED DOUBLES ===

ANNA LEIGH WATERS and BEN JOHNS, the #1 seeds, allowed more than six points on only one of their eight games. After not winning a medal at the Arizona Grand Slam in February, they have won all seven tournaments they have played together, including the last five tournaments. A title here would be their tenth of 2023.

JORJA JOHNSON and JW JOHNSON, the #3 seeds, are the only team to beat Waters/Johns in a match this year. That was in the quarterfinals of the Arizona Grand Slam in February, (4-11, 11-8, 11-9). The Johnsons won a silver medal there, then earned their first title together in Newport Beach in April.

The Mixed Doubles bracket was very “chalk,” with six of the top eight seeds in the quarterfinals, and all four top seeds in the semis.

Bronze medal: (2) Anna Bright and James Ignatowich.

=== MEN’S DOUBLES ===

BEN JOHNS and COLLIN JOHNS, the #1 seeds, are in the finals despite Collin nursing a sore right Achilles tendon, which he hurt in Mixed Doubles Friday. Collin was limping noticeably Saturday. The brothers are going for their tenth title of 2023, bouncing back from a Quarterfinals ouster in Seattle.

DYLAN FRAZIER and JW JOHNSON, the #2 seeds, survived a Quarterfinals win over Dekel Bar and DJ Young (11-9 in the third), and a Semifinals win over Julian Arnold and Thomas Wilson (11-7 in the third)…en route to their sixth final of 2023. They have three titles this year, including one last week in Seattle, but none of those titles were against Ben and Collin.

Bronze medal: (11) Julian Arnold and Thomas Wilson.

=== WOMEN’S DOUBLES ===

ANNA BRIGHT and ANNA LEIGH WATERS, the #1 seeds, are vying for their seventh consecutive title playing together and their third consecutive tournament on the Tour. Waters also has five titles this year with Catherine Parenteau. ALW is undefeated in Women’s Doubles this year. Bright and Waters blistered this bracket, allowing only 12 points in six games.

LUCY KOVALOVA and CALLIE SMITH, the #2 seeds, are looking for their first title since the National Indoor Championships in February. That came after Lucy and Callie lost to Bright and Waters in the final of the Hyundai Masters in January. Kovalova and Smith have eight career titles together.

TIEBREAKER: Anna Leigh and Lucy are tied with 21 career Women’s Doubles titles, the most in PPA Tour history.

Bronze medal: (5) Allyce Jones and Hurricane Tyra Black.
