Carvana Mesa Arizona Cup gets going Tuesday in Mesa

The qualifiers are into the main draw and we’re heading to the round of 32 at the PPA Tour’s Mesa Arizona Cup.

Men’s doubles

In the men’s bracket, former tennis player Donald Young and partner Marshall Brown came in as the No. 27 seed. They beat No. 37-seed Austin O’Reilly and Ryan Sherry in two games, 11-5, 11-4, and moved to the round of 32.

The highest-seeded team playing was No. 16 Andrei Daescu and Gabriel Tardio. The two had no problem, winning 11-2, 11-3 against Santhosh Narayanan and Noah Zwiren.

There were a few upsets in the round of 64. The No. 26-seeded team of Brandon French and Ivan Jakovljevic were beaten in two games by the No. 38-seeded team of Mohaned Alhouni and Samuel Lee, 11-5, 11-9.

Mixed doubles

One of the matches that will be the most interesting on Wednesday will be the 17th-seeded team of Lea Jansen and Andrei Daescu against the No.38-seeded team of Sam Querrey and Kaitlyn Christian, who upset the No. 25-seeded team of Spencer Smith and Olivia McMillan on Tuesday. 

Hurricane Tyra Black, who partnered with Augustus Ge last tournament, won again. This time, Black is partnered with Rafa Hewett. The duo, seeded No. 16, are into the second round where they will face Daniel De La Rosa and Tamaryn Emmrich, the No. 28-seeded team.

Megan Fudge and Martin Emmrich got the biggest upset of the round. They came in seeded No. 41, and they beat the No. 21-seeded team of Pat Smith and Milan Rane, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3. 

The second-highest seed of the day in mixed doubles was Pablo Tellez and Etta Wright. The pair is seeded No. 19, and they needed three games to get past the No. 43-seeded team of Michael Loyd and Brooke Revuelta, 8-11, 11-2, 11-3.

Another mild upset, at the bottom of the bracket was No. 40-seed Gabriel Joseph and Camila Zilveti beating Callan Dawson and Dominique Schaefer, the No. 26-seed, 11-4, 11-8.

Meanwhile, the No. 22-seeded team of Zane Navratil and Allison Phillips were beaten by Anderson Scarpa and Genie Erokhina, the No. 46-seed, 11-9, 2-11, 11-2. 

Men’s singles

There were a few upsets. No. 19-seeded Ryan Sherry was beaten by No. 45-seeded Mario Barrientos, 4-11, 11-1, 11-5. No. 44-seeded Rio Newcombe beat No. 20-seed Ryan Eveloff, 13-11, 11-7.

No. 41-seed Zachary Grabovi beat No. 23-seed Marcel Chan, 11-1, 7-11, 11-2. No. 43-seed Cason Campbell beat Marshall Brown, the No. 21-seed, 11-6, 10-12, 12-10.

Women’s doubles

The highest-seeded team of the day, No. 17 Milan Rane and Bobbi Oshiro advanced easily in the round of 64. 

Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau are the top seed in the draw. They have won 60 matches in a row. They will not play together until Friday.
